About
I have a confession…I used to be afraid of birds! Wait! I said…USED to be. I have a story to tell you about how I got that fear, and then how I got over it…you’ll love it. When I was a little girl, maybe 6 or 7, I was at the local community swimming pool and playground.
I was walking over to the playground section and a flock of Canadian Geese chased me up the sliding board. Here’s the best part, I’m a little girl, crying for my mom to help me….THEY chased HER up the sliding board too! hahahaha, rich, right?
Move up a couple of years, and I’m down at our vacation shore rental. We used to rent the downstairs, and our family friends rented the upstairs…duplex. We did this for years and years and years….and one year, they had a bird there with them…I didn’t realize they’d brought their bird down with them!
I was maybe 12, and sitting playing cards at the table, and all of the sudden something lands on my head - needless to say I FREAKED OUT! Oh my gosh, I was terrified, and this solidified a steady fear of birds.
Fast forward to about the time I’m 15 and we’re tubing down the Delaware, a popular summer activity in PA and NJ - and all of the sudden, I hear SPLAT! It was cemented, and I realized maybe the birds didn’t like me either. ha
Okay, so some people would say it was good luck. I thought it was good luck I was floating down a tube on the river and could just clean up quickly in the water.
Years pass, get married, have kids….and one day my son asks…can I get a parakeet? What? We have a cat, we have a dog…life is good right? A bird! Yikes, what am I going to do?
Long story short…or is it too late? ha…I found a local lady who hand-raised babies. This woman was amazing….she had a little shop that was all birds. The first time I went to the store, I was a little freaked out since I hadn’t been comfortable with birds.
She helped me understand that a hand-raised bird would be a different experience than a “pet shop” bird that didn’t have much human contact…
Well, Petey came and lived with us, and guess who he decided to bond with? You got it…I loved giving him a bath…it was so much fun to watch him at the faucet…anyway, this little bird helped me get over my fear of birds.
I had my eye on a Pionus…well, that’s another story…but this girl was forever change. I went from being afraid of birds all my life to really enjoying them…and I just think the parrots and macaws are glorious, beautiful creatures…
…I’ve rambled on enough.
